PSHE supports many of the principles of safeguarding and includes many strands of SMSC learning and British Values.
Children are provided with learning opportunities across and beyond the curriculum, in specific lessons, circle time, special school projects, awareness days and other activities that enrich pupils’ experiences. There may be occasions where teachers teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in class. It is also taught through our assemblies and Christian values: Respect, Responsibility, Community, Friendship, Forgiveness and Courage.
- We believe that focusing on developing a ‘Growth Mindset’ in our children will help them to build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. We do this through the language we use in class, praising children for their efforts, and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values, and we focus on Growth Mindsets in all aspects of school life.
We use Philosophy based discussion, specific and timetabled PSHE lessons, Values Based Learning, British Values learning, debating, sticky questions, collective worship, speaking & listening and discussion activities to provide these opportunities for children. Alongside this the school leads community outreach projects links with the local charities, educates and celebrates Young Carers and holds a number of fundraising events, school trips, external visitors and celebrates many national and international events. PSHE is an important part of collective worship where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
The key areas included within PSHE are:
- Basic First Aid
- Growth Mindset
- Valuing difference
- Healthy relationships (online safety/anti-bullying)
- Drugs and alcohol awareness
- Healthy choices & hygiene
- British values
- Inclusion, belonging and extremism
- Raising hopes and aspirations
- Financial capabilities
- Healthy relationships (including consent)
- Talking mental health and wellbeing / sex education / what is abuse?
In addition to Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of Sex Education that is covered in our Science Curriculum. Alongside this we teach about different kinds of relationships, including same sex relationships, and gender identity because it is important that our children should understand the full diversity of the world they live in and be prepared for life in modern Britain.
