Learning to Shape Our Future
We intend to give all our children the ability to understand and communicate in another language. We aim to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language, to develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences between countries, which will contribute to a sense of global citizenship, mutual understanding and personal fulfilment.
We aim to give them a firm foundation to continue learning French or another language at secondary school as it can be a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
How We Learn
Our children will learn French through a range of fun and interactive experiences: children will be introduced to new vocabulary through songs and stories, games and activities. Phonics will be taught explicitly (using pictures and actions) so that children have the key knowledge necessary to decode words and speak French with the correct pronunciation. They will have the resilience to persevere by building the confidence to ‘have a go’ at speaking, reading and writing in French, with increasing accuracy, creativity and independence.
In line with the National Curriculum, our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. All our children in KS2 will have regular language lessons and will take part in French themed Bastille Day where they will immerse themselves in French culture.
